Backup Power / Emergency Power

An operating mode in which stored energy supplies critical loads during outages. Often combined with micro-grid logic and hybrid inverters to enable seamless islanding.

Bankable Storage

Energy storage solutions with proven performance, certified components, and documented uptime that satisfy lender and insurer requirements—unlocking project finance for utility-scale and commercial projects.

BESS Battery Energy Storage System

A complete energy storage asset comprising battery modules, BMS, power conversion, housing, and controls. Farich’s ESS portfolio spans residential through utility-scale BESS deployments.

Black Start Capability

The ability of a storage system to energize a power plant or grid section without external supply. Typically delivered alongside grid support contracts and enabled by robust PCS controls.

BMS Battery Management System

CE Marking

C&I ESS (Commercial & Industrial Energy Storage System)

Containerized ESS

An industrial storage solution packaged in ISO shipping containers for plug-and-play logistics. Often paired with liquid cooling and UL 9540 certification for rapid deployment.

Cycle Life

The number of full charge/discharge cycles a battery endures before capacity falls to a defined threshold (typically 70–80%). Influenced by chemistry, thermal control, and depth-of-discharge policies.

Demand Charge Management

The use of storage to flatten spikes in electricity consumption, thereby reducing utility demand charges. Works alongside peak-shaving and may be automated via AI-EMS.

Depth of Discharge (DoD)

The percentage of total capacity that is discharged during a cycle. Higher allowable DoD increases usable energy, but system designers coordinate with the BMS to protect cycle life.

Distributed ESS

A network of smaller energy storage assets located close to loads or generation. Requires sophisticated AI-EMS or SCADA to orchestrate aggregated services.

EMS Energy Management System

The supervisory software and controls that monitor, forecast, and dispatch energy assets. Integrates data from smart BMS, SCADA, and market signals to optimize uptime and economics.

Energy Arbitrage

A revenue strategy that charges batteries when prices are low and discharges during high-price windows. Requires accurate forecasting via predictive analytics and responsive PCS controls.

ESS Energy Storage System

An umbrella term for the full hardware and software stack that stores energy for later use. Includes batteries, BMS, PCS, EMS, safety systems, and auxiliary equipment.

EV Charging Station

Charging infrastructure supported by onsite storage to avoid peak demand or grid constraints. Frequently paired with demand charge management strategies.

Grade-A Cells

The top classification of lithium-ion cells, featuring tight capacity tolerances, low internal resistance, and consistent pedigree. Essential for meeting bankability criteria.

Grid Support

Ancillary services such as frequency regulation, voltage support, spinning reserve, and black start. Requires fast-reacting power conversion systems and grid-code compliance.

High-Voltage (HV) Series

Battery stacks engineered for higher string voltages, typically mated with hybrid inverters to achieve better efficiency and reduced wiring losses in large systems.

Home ESS / Residential ESS

Right-sized storage for single or multi-family dwellings focused on solar + storage, bill reduction, and backup power. Emphasizes silent operation and compact footprints.

Hybrid Inverter

A bidirectional inverter capable of handling both PV and storage inputs. Works hand-in-hand with AI-EMS to orchestrate solar + storage micro-grids.

kW (Kilowatt)

Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS)

An economic metric that spreads total lifecycle costs over total delivered energy. Influenced by efficiency, cycle life, and financing terms tied to bankability.

LFP / LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate)

A lithium-ion chemistry renowned for thermal stability, long cycle life, and inherent safety. It is the primary chemistry across the Farich portfolio.

Low-Voltage (LV) Series

Micro-grid

MW (Megawatt)

A power unit equal to 1,000 kilowatts. Used to describe the discharge/charge capability of utility-scale ESS.

MWh (Megawatt-hour)

An energy unit equal to 1,000 kWh. Commonly used when discussing grid-connected storage portfolios and BESS financing.

PCS Power Conversion System

The bidirectional inverter block that converts DC energy into AC and vice versa for charging. Works with the BMS to comply with grid services requirements.

Peak-Shaving

The strategy of using stored energy to reduce grid imports during high-tariff periods. A foundational use case for C&I ESS and demand charge management.

Portable Power Station

Predictive Analytics

Smart BMS

State of Charge (SoC)

The percentage of remaining energy in a battery relative to full capacity. Calculated continuously by the BMS to inform dispatch decisions.

State of Health (SoH)

A metric comparing current battery performance to its original specification, capturing degradation over time. Critical for warranty management and predictive maintenance.

UL 1973

A safety standard covering stationary batteries and light rail applications. Demonstrates intrinsic cell and module safety ahead of system-level UL 9540 certification.

UL 9540

UL 9540A

A test methodology that evaluates thermal runaway behavior at cell, module, and rack levels. Provides evidence to support zero thermal runaway claims.

UL Certification

Voltage
